I am proud to be a part of such a free-spirited generation, and anyone who knows me will say that I am far-from-shy about encouraging wanderlust and the passionate pursuit of dreams. Travel is such a valuable experience that opens up our eyes to the beautiful diversity of the world, and I am so thankful for the platform that Pages of My Passport has given me to help others explore the planet. Read on for some inspiration on 6 different adventures that are perfect for you 20-somethin's out there.
1. Explore Europe By Train
Europe has such a fantastic public transportation system that a visit here has become almost like a rite-of-passage for the millennial generation. It's a great place to start traveling if you are a newbie, but it is also filled with such variety that even a seasoned wanderer will continue to find hidden treasures. Italy is one of my all-time favorite countries that I have visited, and I highly recommend it if you are deciding on a starting point. Check out my photo galleries from some of Italy's best cities here for inspiration.
2. Volunteer in a 3rd World Country
As some of you know, my love and appreciation for foreign cultures first began while working at Orphanage Emmanuel in Honduras. These people and this country will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I hope to continue returning for visits in the future. Any experience in a country with such strikingly different living standards is sure to have an impact on you, but I suggest opting for this when you can commit to an extended time period, as the benefits for both yourself and the organization you work with will be much greater. Instead of a spring-break trip, why not take a semester break from college, or dedicate your summer to a worthwhile cause?
3. Road Trip Around New Zealand
New Zealand is one of the most safe and beautiful countries in the world. I spent an incredible 7 weeks road-tripping with my best friend across the north and south islands last year, and we met so many other travelers, who in turn became good friends of ours as well. This is a must-visit destination for any outdoors/nature-lovers out there. My time in this country consisted primarily of hiking, camping, kayaking, and swimming at the most breathtaking locations every day.
4. Backpack Through Latin America
Latin America is a backpacker's dream! Delicious street food, rich culture, the chaotic "chicken buses," salsa dancing, colorful streets, and a ridiculously cheap cost-of-living. Fun hostels filled with friendly travelers are scattered up and down all of Central and South America, making a shoe-string trip easily possible. I backpacked with a friend a few summers ago - we began in Nicaragua and worked our way down to Peru.
5. Get a Short Term Job or Internship Abroad
Although I love being constantly on-the-move, I have found immersive experiences to be so rewarding. When settled into one place for a longer period of time, you are able to learn more deeply about the culture and everyday life of the locals. I have worked as an au-pair for two different families, once in Italy and once in Australia. Au-pairing is a perfect fit for me, as I love children, but there are many different options for finding work abroad - WWOOFing, teaching English, working at a hostel, or bartending, just to name a few. I used the website aupairworld.com to find jobs working as a nanny. If you're looking for something a bit more formal, universities often assist in the search for international internships, where you can gain a valuable cultural experience while also boosting your resume.
6. Go on a USA Road Trip
Ironically, I really haven't traveled very much around the United States - I've spent more time in other countries than I have here over the last 5 years. I decided that I wanted to start exploring this country and appreciating the diversity here, and so drove down the west coast from Seattle - San Francisco for the first time this summer. I have to admit that I have totally jumped on the van life movement, and am dreaming about packing up my things into an old VW Westy and exploring all of our country's national parks and bookstores....
Which adventure is the perfect fit for you? I would love to help make your travel dreams possible. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and I will do my best to connect you with the proper resources and get you started on planning your adventure.
Also, be sure to follow along during my upcoming backpacking trip throughout Asia - I'll be posting updates primarily through Instagram @pages_of_my_passport.
Thank you for reading this post and supporting Pages of My Passport!
I believe in God's grace through Jesus. I love to learn, in a variety of contexts - reading God's Word, interacting with people from diverse backgrounds around the world, and as a student of Linguistics and Foreign Languages at Western Washington University. Pages of My Passport is dedicated to sharing this journey of learning through written and visual content.
