I've been in Australia for a week now, and although I am absolutely loving the incredible weather and beautiful beaches here, my favorite thing so far about this country is the people!
It's definitely the friendliest place I've ever traveled to, which is great being a solo traveler. It's pretty easy to strike up conversation with an Aussie while waiting for the bus or while in line at a store; they all seem to enjoy chatting with just about anyone. Plus, I love talking to the people here even if just to hear their accent, which I am in love with. The only difficulty I have is understanding all of the local lingo - they use so much slang! Hopefully I will catch on by the end of my two months here.
I also really like the laid-back style that the Aussies have. The Gold Coast has a super chill vibe. Everyone here dresses really casual - often times in beachwear, as the city where I live is literally on the coast and is primarily beaches.
The last thing that I love about Australians is their straightforward way of speaking. They never seem to beat-around-the-bush to tell you something or sugar-coat it, like is common in the States. This bluntness is growing on me now and I appreciate the honesty.
...And so far there are two things that I don't love about Australia:
1. The cost-of-living is extremely high - everything from food, clothes,
and transportation is ridiculously expensive.
2. It's a very spread-out country, which makes traveling to other cities, or even just
around within Gold Coast, much more difficult than it is in Europe. I can often spend
an hour in travel time (catching several buses and the tram) just to get to the
other side of the city I live in.
Anyways, I am enjoying my time here. The family that I'm staying with is really chill - I like talking to both of the parents; they have lots of interesting stories to tell, and I'm learning more about Australia from them. The kids are great too - one boy and two little girls, all three super fun with distinct personalities! I'm starting to make friends here and have found some good spots to hangout when I have time-off. I'm also hoping to check out a nearby church that I found soon! I'm excited to see what the next two months have in store!
