Ooh Ooh and I traveled by bus together from Inle Lake to Pyay. On the way, we had a stopover in Sulamuni, where we got lunch and visited this pagoda.
World Heritage Site - Pyu Ancient City
Upon arrival in Pyay, we met up with my friend Shin who studies in a university there. He brought some of his friends from school, and we loaded up on two motorcycles to explore the city for the day. Our first stop was the Pyu Ancient City, a world heritage site.
Motorcycle Ride to Pagoda in the Mountains
In the afternoon we rode up into the mountains to reach a beautiful pagoda. We spent awhile here exploring.
There was traditional thanaka makeup just outside of the pagoda. Shin showed us how to grind the bark on the circular slate to produce the yellowish paste, which we then applied to our faces. Thanaka is used by both men and women in Myanmar.
We spent the evening doing more exploring via motorcycle, eating a yummy dinner of traditional Burmese salads and rice, and visiting another pagoda. We were having so much fun, that Ooh Ooh and I nearly missed our night bus to Yangon! Going to the bus station was kind of crazy - I was riding on the back of Shin's motorcycle, sans helmet, going 100 mph on a busy street....and halfway there, we had to slow down because of a GIANT snake that was making its way across the road.... I was definitely thankful when we finally made it to the bus in time!
